Maintaining steel roofing and cedar cladding

Follow the product care instructions and inspect cladding, roofing and drainage regularly.

Roofing and cladding need regular care. Ask your builder for the product names, warranties and maintenance instructions at handover, and keep these with your property records.

Clean cladding using the method recommended by its manufacturer. Coastal exposure, shade and nearby trees may affect how often cleaning is needed. Check the instructions before using detergents or pressure-cleaning equipment.

Arrange regular checks of gutters, downpipes, roof flashings and exposed fixings. Blocked drainage and damaged roofing should be addressed promptly. Use a qualified contractor for work at height.

Cedar changes colour as it weathers. If it has an oil, stain or coating, follow that product supplier’s inspection and recoating schedule. Exposure and the condition of the finish affect the timing.

Keep planting and stored items clear of the cladding and maintain the drainage around the home. Follow the clearances on the drawings and ask your builder about any damage or moisture concerns.
